Our neighborhood is known as Hyde Park. The main entrance to the hospital is at 5841 South Maryland Avenue. This is adjacent to the parking garage, and is most convenient if you are driving. Another entrance is at 5812 South Ellis. This entrance may be more convenient if you are using public transportation, but may not always be open very early in the morning. (There are frequently people arriving who have keys to the door; or, if necessary, you can enter via the emergency room around the corner.)
Please use appropriate caution on public transportation. The routes we have given here are well traveled but, as in any big city, things can happen. In general, though, you should expect to find most Chicagoans friendly and helpful.
Parking in Hyde Park is limited near campus. Metered visitor parking is available behind Ida Noyes Hall at Woodlawn and 59th. (Bring quarters.) Valet parking is available at the high-rise parking facility bordering the west side of the University Hospital. As in any city, parking can sometimes take a while to find, so please allow yourself an extra 15 minutes or so to secure a spot.
Places to Stay When Interviewing
Unfortunately, we are unable to house students when they come for their interview. However, Hyde Park and the city of Chicago offer many possibilities. The Hyde Park Ramada is the hotel nearest campus, and they do offer a U. Chicago rate, with a shuttle to campus. Reservations may be made at 1-800-237-4933 or (773) 288-5800. Inexpensive housing is available on campus at International House, which features dormitory style living in a beautiful building of Gothic architecture. Please call (773) 753-2270 for reservations. We also recommend the local bed and breakfast:
The Hyde Park House
