In celebration of Women's History Month, the ISA honors our physicians who have made outstanding contributions to the field of anesthesiology

Our very own Dr. Barbara Scavone has been recognized by the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists as a physicians who have made outstanding contributions to the field of anesthesiology. She received her undergraduate degrees from the University of Illinois in Urbana and her MD from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She is a Professor in the Departments of both Anesthesia & Critical Care and Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Chicago. In the Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care she served as Vice Chair for Academic Development before recently stepping down from her administrative posts as she winds down her career.

In that role she mentored many junior faculty through academic success and helped them achieve academic promotions. She also was Section Chief of Obstetric Anesthesiology and Clinical Director of Labor and Delivery, building a well-respected academic division and competitive obstetric anesthesia fellowship.

She has authored several original research and review articles in the peer-reviewed literature and has contributed chapters to major anesthesia texts, including Chestnut Obstetric Anesthesia the premiere text for the subspecialty. Her expertise has garnered her multiple speaking invitations nationally and internationally.

Dr. Scavone is Past President of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP), a subspecialty society of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the primary organization of obstetric anesthesiologists in the United States. Her ASA appointments include memberships on the Committee on Obstetric Anesthesia and the OB Anesthesia Educational Track Subcommittee. Dr. Scavone also served for several years as the SOAP representative to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist's (ACOG) Council on Patient Safety in Women's Healthcare and its National Partnership for Maternal Safety. In that role she was contributing author on several of that organizations Patient Safety Bundle used throughout the US as standards of care to ensure maternal safety and well-being.
