The “categorical” program is the 4 year program and the “advanced” program is the 3 year program. You may apply to both programs just by checking both boxes on your Electronic Residency Application Service form. We will have ~12 categorical positions and ~8 advanced positions. If you intended to rank in a 3 year program, you must submit an “additional” rank list for your internship programs. Applying and interviewing for internships that accompany our advanced positions are the sole responsibility of the applicant.
We do not have a specific application deadline. We will be interviewing on 10 days and will offer 25+ interview slots each day. We will not be adding additional interview dates; therefore, once the slots have been filled, applications will no longer be accepted. We advise you to get your application to us as soon as possible or at the latest by the end October.
We require 3 current letters of recommendation (this does not include the Medical Student Performance Evaluation – aka dean’s letter). If you are currently in a graduate medical education program, one of the letters of recommendation MUST be from your PGY-1 program director. In addition to the letters of recommendation, we require your USMLE scores, MSPE and transcript, CV, personal statement and photo to consider an application complete.

Our residents live throughout the city. Although large in size, Chicago has great neighborhoods that our residents call home. Rentals are affordable on a resident’s salary. We encourage you to speak with our current residents about their living experiences in Chicago.
• Hyde Park: Residents choose Hyde Park because it is close to the hospital and campus. They can walk or bike and it’s probably the least expensive.
• Downtown Chicago / Gold Coast: It is a 10 – 15 minute morning commute to campus, 20 – 25 minute evening commute from campus. Access to hundreds of restaurants and clubs, the theatre, and cultural events is convenient. High-rise apartments may mean a more expensive cost of living.
• Lincoln Park / Bucktown: It is a 20 minute morning commute to campus, 35 minute evening commute from campus. The area is a "hip" place to live with townhouses and lofts. Cost of living is moderate.
• Suburbs: Many of our residents who are married and have kids live in the suburbs of Chicago. Commutes vary.
We are NOT a CRNA training program. On a typical work day, there are ~20 CRNAs for approximately 30+ anesthetizing locations. Scheduling of cases for residents is done daily by the anesthesia coordinator according to resident educational needs. The remaining ORs and some of the call burden is covered by CRNAs. The working relationship between the CRNAs and our residents is excellent.
One of the program highlights is our spectacular location in Chicago, and our social lives revolve around this dynamic city. Nightlife in the city starts with the great restaurants in Chicago, which range from fine dining at Everest or Alinea to neighborhood restaurants serving BBQ and pizza (including deep dish). We often get together for a great meal or for our monthly resident outing at a local spot. Besides eating and drinking, we get together after work and on the weekends for basketball, biking and running along the lakeshore path, and of course, shopping on the Magnificent Mile. Chicago has great sport teams, and residents often catch a Cubs game at Wrigley or a Blackhawks game in the winter. Summer in Chicago offers a vibrant cultural life including street festivals, music festivals, and Chicago beaches. Some of the highlights include the Old City Art Fair, the Taste of Randolph Street, Lollapalooza, and free concerts in the beautiful Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. Overall, our program offers a top notch educational experience in a city with many options to relax and enjoy outside the hospital.
